FAQs

We have listed our most frequently asked questions about Total Sweet and xylitol but if there is anything else you'd like to know then please get in touch, we love hearing from you!

Where can I buy Total Sweet?

Total Sweet is available in supermarkets and health food shops up and down the country or you can buy it directly on our website.

Is Total Sweet suitable for those with diabetes?

Total Sweet is generally a great sugar alternative for those with diabetes, with a GI value of just 7. This is fantastic news as finally there is a natural sugar alternative on the market for those looking to cut down on sugar but avoid artificial sweeteners. That said, there are different types and severities of diabetes and if you are in any doubt over whether Total Sweet is suitable for you please consult your GP or health advisor.

Is Total Sweet safe for animals?

Dogs digest some foods differently to humans, which is why chocolate and raisins might taste good to us, but aren’t so good for our furry friends. Xylitol is also digested by dogs in a different way to humans and it can cause their blood sugar levels to drop dramatically and in some cases even cause death in dogs. So please don’t give your pet anything containing Total Sweet, or other xylitol brands, it might be healthy for us, but it’s not so good for them.

How much does Total Sweet cost?

Our 225g bags have an RRP of £3.49 per bag and our 1kg bags £12.49, but different retailers may sell them at slightly different prices.

Can I use Total Sweet in cooking?

Total Sweet can be used in cooking in exactly the same way as sugar. Just replace the amount of sugar in any recipe with exactly the same amount of Total Sweet. The only two differences are that Total Sweet will not caramelise like sugar and yeast doesn't feed on it, so you can't bake traditional bread with it.

What is xylitol?

Xylitol is a natural sugar alternative that is found in a whole host of plants and fruits. It was first found in birch wood (hence the name xylitol, which comes from the Ancient Greek word 'xyl', meaning wood), and today our product is still made from birch and beech wood. Xylitol tastes and looks just like sugar, but has many well researched health benefits.

How long does Total Sweet last?

Our Total Sweet bags have a shelf life of one year, so it should last in your cupboard for a good while if you keep it stored in a cool, dry place - not that it will once you've tasted it!

How much Total Sweet can I use in a day?

The body treats xylitol differently from sugar and artificial sweeteners and some users find it can have a laxative effect. If this occurs reduce the amount you are using until your body gets use to it. To help avoid this effect we suggest that daily consumption should be limited to 5g – 10g per 10kg of body weight (adults and children alike) and very young children shouldn't use it.

What is Total Sweet made from?

Total Sweet xylitol is made from sustainable European birch and beech wood in Finland. Some products claim to be from just birch wood, but this is not strictly true as beech wood is also used in the manufacturing process.

Should I use xylitol whilst pregnant, brest feeding or with very young children?

We like to think we are a responsible company, driven by helping the health of the nation and not by profit. In this respect, due to there not being a lot of research on xylitol during pregnancy, we'd recommend avoiding xylitol whilst pregnant or breast feeding. We'd also recommend avoiding giving very young children xylitol.
