Total Tomato Sauce

It's not just sweet dishes that contain sugar, pick up a jar of tomato sauce and you might be surprised at how much sugar you'll find on the ingredients list. Try this simple homemade version for a much healthier option.


  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, chopped
  • 400g canned tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp red pesto
  • 1/4 tsp mild chilli powder
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to flavour
  • 1 tbsp shredded fresh basil
  • 2 tbsp freshly grated parmesan


  1. Heat the oil in a frying pan over low heat, add the garlic and saute for 30 seconds 
  2. Stir in the tomatoes and break them up with a wooden spoon
  3. Add the remaining ingredients except for the basil and parmesan, season and simmer gently for 10 minutes 
  4. Stir in the basil and parmesan, and cook just until the cheese has started to melt 
  5. Serve with fish, white meat or pasta 
  6. Can also be used as a pizza base topping
